SOME OUTREACH OPPPORTUNITIES

SUMMER 2010 OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES

Lunch Bags

There are many children in the Country Pantry area (Clinton, Clark Mills, Westmoreland) that do not have access to school lunches or summer lunch programs. Please help out by picking up a "lunch bag" located in the food basket. Fill the bag using the orange request list on the bag. Return the filled bag to the church or to Country Pantry. Your generosity helps these high risk children in our area from going hungry this summer.
Country Pantry Garden
Vegetables are ready for harvest at the Country Pantry Garden located behind Resurrection Life church on Kirkland Avenue. Tuesday and Fridays are the designated work days. Any help is greatly appreciated; just come on by  if you can help out. St. James will again refrigerate the harvest until it can be delivered to the Country Pantry clients.

Toileties - as you travel
We are collecting toileties for the area homeless. As you travel, please consider bringing back unused (un-opened) containers of toileties from any hotel/motel stays.  These can be placed in the box in the back of the church for distribution to those in need.

Hope House dinner - Tuesday, Aug 3
St. James is preparing and serving dinner at the first Tuesday of  August. We are looking for helpers. You can help prepare food, or and help serve it, whatever works best for your schedule;
  • noon to 3 pm is the preparation shift,
  • 3 to 5:30 pm is the serving shift OR
  • make some brownies or bar cookies and leave them well wrapped in the church kitchen, labeled "For Hope House" by Aug 1.

Again, a few hours of your time will help spread the good news of Christ right here at home (Contact Karen A or the church office if you want to help out.  Also check the sign-up sheets on the cork board in the Parish Hall and the back of the church.
The July 6th dinner at Hope House was a great success. Thank you Pat E., Patricia J., John P., Chris and Patty F., Susan, Isabella "Isie" and Sophia P., and Wendy S. The prep crew began at 10 am at the church and then continued at Hope House at 12:30. Since JoElyn is the day manager on Tuesday, she also got to boss us around and help out! We took a break to walk down to MWPI to see the sidewalk art and cook in the heat and were grateful to return to the AC in the kitchen for the final prep. The serve crew did a great job and everyone was out of there by 5:15!

It was a great day for St. James and I hope a day of gratitude and growth for all involved. I know for me it is always a humbling experience. This was a great outreach across the ages - Way to go Isie and Sophie! We have learned some tricks for the next time around and hope to include some new faces. We thank you again for being the hands and feet of Jesus Christ in our community.

Bottle and Can Collection - For many years, Peace O. has faithfully collected returnable drink bottles and cans and donated the deposit money to the the local food pantry. If you have a large number of returnable bottles or cans to donate, call the church office.

Fair trade coffee
 St. James Church uses fair trade coffee. We see this as one step we can take in helping to alleviate poverty in the world by helping these farmers provide financially for their families.
