| Raise the Roof: Our new slate roof project |
 |
In May of 2008 Holly Horner brought her loyal class of exercisers to St. James. Based on the previous cost of the classes, Holly offers her classes for donations only. Holly chose to give these donations to the bell tower repairs. As of December, 2009, this income has amounted to over $5000. Maybe you’ve noticed the chart above the church mail slots with the slowly filling bell tower, indicating the progress of the project. We are very grateful to her for her energy, inspiration and generosity.
Newcomers are always welcome to her classes. However, she will be taking a two-month break beginning mid January, 2010.

UPDATE:
Having replaced the roof, we repaired the belfry (bell tower). Old paint was removed, rotten wood replaced with new stock and all was repainted. The cost of this repair was more than anticipated. We encourage all to show their support and faith by donating towards the repair.
In May 2008, we replaced our historic slate roof which was more than 100 years oldwith new slate. It had been repaired twice in the last five years and, We thank everyone who has helped us meet (and exceed) our in-house goal through their pledges and offerings.
 | CAPITAL CAMPAIGN If any of us, like Peter, felt compelled to shimmy up on the roof of St. James to pray, our first petition might be something like, "Dear God, please let it hold1" Now that our roof is more than 100 years old, and it has been extensively repaired twice in the last five years alone, our time has come to be good stewards of our spiritual home. We must replace the slate roof. |
After much deliberation, both Vestry and the Resource Management Committee concur that replacing the entire roof makes the most financial and preactical sense. American Roofing and Sheet Metal, Inc. of West Winfield will remove all current slate and underlying cedar shake shingles, including asbestos roofing from short sections of the Rectory, attach new plywood and roofing felt, install all new Vermont Slate shingles, add ice and water barriers, copper drip edges, valleys and flashing where necessary, and install a new copper roof cap for $94,000. |

We have applied for a $50,000 grant from the Robert W. Wilson Sacred Sites Challenge grant program of the New York Landmarks Conservancy. To be eligible for this grant, the congregation must raise $75,000. The Vestry approved a capital roof campaign for $85,000. This amount, coupled with the possible $50, 000 grant from the New York Landmarks Conservancy, is higher than the estimated cost of replacing the roof for three reasons:
- we must allow for unforeseen expenses associated with replacing the roof, such as damage to the plaster ceiling of the chapel;
- there is no guarantee that we will be awarded a Landmarks grant;
- if possible, we plan to set aside a modest maintained fund for future maintenance of the new roof.

Haiti was struck by a magnitude 7.0 earthquake, on Jan 12, 2010 and Chile suffered a 8.8 earthquake on Feb. 28th. St. James outreach has sent more than $1200 in Haiti relief funds. At the Parish pancake brunch on Feb 14th, we collected another $800 which will be send shortly. To donate, send checks to the church office, made out to ER-D or to St. James with Haiti on the memo line. If you prefer, contribute directly to ERD OR through
To donate material goods; go to Agape Flights. Agape Flights is flying often and able to land in Port au Prince. The supplies are reaching the medical clinics, orphanages, schools, and churches.

CHALLENGE GRANT GOAL MET
We are greatly heartened by the generous support of the congregation. WE MADE and EXCEEDED OUR INTERNAL GOAL OF $85K thanks to the continual faithfulness of our parish member and P. Couper's generous offer to match pledges.
The remaining funds were used to re-paint the belfry. Unfortunately, as the old paint was removed, much rotten wood was revealed. This was replaced, but our bill exceeded the remaining funds. We transferred money from our endowment, but would greatly appreciate faith giving to off-set the cost.
We also thank the New York Landmarks Conservancy for $10,000 towards our roof project. The grant comes from the Sacred Sites Program.
Fair trade coffee St. James Church uses fair trade coffee. We see this as one step we can take in helping to alleviate poverty in the world by helping these farmers provide financially for their families.
