St. James Choirs
St. James' Church has a strong musical presence. We have three choirs: the Adult Choir, the Junior Choir and the Children's Choir. They rehearse and perform from early September to mid-June.
We are always looking for new members, always listening to all the singing, always aware of how important music is to worship at St. James'.

ADULT CHOIR
To be a member of the all-volunteer Adult Choir is to be a leader of worship. In an average Sunday service, the congregation and choir sing six hymns, a psalm, and three selections of service music. The choir will often provide four-part harmonies to hymns that are only melody in the hymnal. Many different styles of sung psalm are used, including
- cantor/response,
- Anglican chant,
- the Ionian Psalter,
- the Portland Psalter and
- the St. Martin's Psalter.
On its own, the choir sings an offertory anthem and a choir communion hymn. There is strong four to eight-part singing in the choir, and many good soloists. Every now and then a special piece is performed, such as Lotti's Crucifixus, Allegri's Miserere, Thompson's Alleluia, and the Wilcox arrangement of Lord of the Dance.
We are always looking for new members. Though our workload is substantial, we make sure to find time during our 7:30-9:00 pm Thursday rehearsals for fun and camaraderie. After all, you've got to have a bit of a break once in a while!

CHILDREN'S CHOIRS
The youngest children begin their music experience at St. James' in the Children's Choir. This choir for the most part works on familiar and simplified tunes, which are memorized. As the members of this choir are generally too young to read, the words to the melodies are often simplified. The choir has a loose performance schedule throughout the year, and also prepares for special events such as the Christmas/Epiphany Pageant, Palm Sunday and Easter.
The Junior Choir members are generally from 7 to 12 years old. This choir works on music written for two or three parts. As with the Children's Choir, this choir's schedule is based on preparedness, though they always sing at least once for every season (Pentecost-Fall, Advent/Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter, Pentecost-Spring). The music this choir sings is becoming more complex as the children get older and more experienced.
Both the Children's Choir and the Junior Choir rehearse on Sunday mornings, after the service.

Fair trade coffee St. James Church uses fair trade coffee. We see this as one step we can take in helping to alleviate poverty in the world by helping these farmers provide financially for their families.
