A CHILDREN'S
ORIENTED SERVICE
JULY 26, 2009

with The Rev. Peter Williams

The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.

Jesus was near the big lake called the Sea of Galilee. A crowd of people followed him to a mountain near the lake. Jesus sat down on the side of the mountain with his friends, the apostles. Then he saw the big crowd coming to see him. Jesus said to his friend Philip, "Where are we going to get bread to feed all these people?" Philip was upset and said, "If we earned money for six months, we could only buy enough to give each person a little piece of bread." Another friend, Andrew, said, "There is a young boy here who has 5 barley loaves of bread, and two fish. But what difference does that make?There are just too many people here, and we don't have any food to give them." Jesus said, " Tell the people to sit down." It was a nice grassy field there, and the people all sat down. There were about five thousand people! Jesus took the bread, and he gave thanks to God. Then he passed out the bread to the people. In the same way, he took the fish, gave thanks, and handed it out to the people. When all the people finished eating, and were satisfied, Jesus told his friends to gather up all the pieces of food that were left over. They did that, and the leftover bread filled twelve big baskets! When the people realized a miracle had happened, they said to each other, "This must be the great prophet the holy books talk about!" Jesus realized that the people wanted him to be their king, and he slipped away, because that was not his mission. Later on, the apostles got into a boat to go across the lake. A storm began, and the water was rough with big waves. Out in the middle of the lake, they saw Jesus walking on the water. They were very afraid. Jesus said "It is I, do not be afraid." They were ready to help Jesus into the boat, but suddenly the boat landed on the other shore, and they had no idea how that happened.

The children were invited to come up to hear the Gospel reading.  It appears to the left.

Fr. Peter mentioned a television show about a kitchen where chefs are invited to prepare food.  The main person shouts at the chefs, gets angry with them, says very nasty things and tells them to leave.  The show is "Hell's Kitchen."  It is not a very nice show.

Fr. Peter tells us about Heaven's kitchen....but first we need chef's hats! Maybe we can make SOMEMOREs!

We need chocolate, marshmallows, Graham crackers and a grill. Oh, may be bringing a grill into the church is not a good idea.

Fr. Peter talks about the recipe in the Gospel; bread - but since Jesus was Jewish, Fr. Peter is using bagels - and fish - but fish can be rather stinky if left out, so he made two fish out of paper plates.

But there are some other important ingredients in God's recipe;
love, caring, sharing, being united, showing compassion, and ALWAYS GIVING THANKS.

With these, all things can be done and there will always be enough. That's Heaven's economy.

So we sing...and have Eucharist - the people giving thanks - and a miracle happens.

The Eucharist, also called Holy Communion or The Lord's Supper is the Christian sacrament which is the commemoration and remembrance of Jesus' Last Supper. Eucharisteo is the usual verb for "to thank" in the New Testament, so the Eucharist is also an act of thankfulness. In the Episcopal church, it is the main act of worship and is generally a part of each worship service.  St. James Episcopal church worships and celebrates Holy Eucharist at 5:15pm on Saturdays (except August) and 9:30am on Sundays.
All are welcome to join us, whether a member of the Episcopal church or not.

Fair trade coffee
 St. James Church uses fair trade coffee. We see this as one step we can take in helping to alleviate poverty in the world by helping these farmers provide financially for their families.
